About Mainspring

A Workshop Shaped by Patience

Mainspring came from a belief that a mechanical watch deserves to be handled by someone who takes its construction seriously — not someone fitting it into a hurried schedule.

Our Story

How Mainspring Began

The workshop was established in Chatuchak in 2009 by Krit Nantawat, a watchmaker who had spent several years training in Hong Kong and learning the particular demands of humidity and temperature that Bangkok places on sealed movements. He returned to Thailand with a straightforward ambition: offer mechanical watch owners a place where the work is done properly and the process is explained clearly.

Mainspring has grown steadily since then, adding two further watchmakers and investing in timing instrumentation and pressure testing equipment. The name was chosen deliberately — the mainspring is the core energy source of a mechanical movement, and getting it right underpins everything else the watch does.

We work across a range of services: water resistance reseals, regulation and accuracy tuning, and more involved complication servicing for chronographs and calendar pieces. Each job follows the same approach regardless of scale — examine first, confirm the plan, carry out the work, and document the result.

The People

Who Works on Your Watch

Three watchmakers, each with a different area of depth, working in the same small workshop.

KN

Krit Nantawat

Founder & Lead Watchmaker

Trained in Hong Kong, specialising in movement regulation and complication service. Has been working on mechanical pieces for over eighteen years.

PW

Pim Wiriya

Watchmaker — Sealing & Cases

Joined Mainspring in 2014, focusing on water resistance services and case restoration. Runs most of the workshop's pressure testing.

TP

Thanit Prayoon

Watchmaker — Complications

Focuses on chronographs and annual calendars. Works methodically through complex disassembly and takes care over documentation of each complication job.

How We Work

Our Workshop Standards

The approach doesn't change depending on the piece. Every watch gets the same level of care, documentation, and honest communication.

Timing Equipment Maintained

Our timing machines are calibrated regularly. A poorly-maintained instrument gives readings no one can rely on.

Pressure Testing on Every Seal Job

Where the case design allows, every water resistance service ends with a pressure check — not assumed, confirmed.

Written Job Records

Service records accompany each watch, noting what was done, any parts replaced, and readings taken before and after.

Secure Handling

Watches in our care are stored individually, logged on intake, and only returned to their owner or confirmed representative.

Pre-Work Confirmation

For complication jobs, we confirm the full scope and cost before the bench begins. No surprises on collection.

Appropriate Lubricants Used

We use movement-specific lubricants in the quantities the manufacturer specifies — not a generalised approach.

Our Approach

Mechanical Watch Servicing in Bangkok

Bangkok's climate places particular demands on watch seals. High humidity and rapid temperature changes between air-conditioned spaces and the outdoors accelerate the ageing of gaskets. For active wearers, especially those who swim or spend time near water, regular seal checks are simply part of responsible ownership.

Mainspring handles watch servicing for private owners across Bangkok. We work on Swiss mechanical movements, Japanese automatic movements, and a range of vintage pieces where appropriate parts and knowledge are available. Each enquiry is assessed individually — we don't apply a one-size service to every watch that comes in.

Accuracy matters differently to different owners. A collector who wears a vintage piece occasionally has different expectations to someone relying on a mechanical watch daily. Our regulation service starts from that question — what does this watch need to do, and is it currently doing it? The timing sheet we produce at the end of the job is a factual record, not a marketing claim.

We believe small workshops survive by doing the work well. Word of mouth from owners who trusted us with a valued piece and found the experience straightforward is the foundation we've built on since 2009.
